Q – My uPVC windows have worn out and need replacing. I’m reluctant to buy plastic windows again because of the climate crisis, but I’m nervous about buying wooden windows because they always used to jam in damp weather and be draughty in Summer. They also rotted, which is why I went for uPVC in th e first place. What do you advise?

A – There are millions of people in the same predicament here in the UK alone. Like you, they bought uPVC windows because they were told they were maintenance free and would always keep their looks, but now they’re yello wing and in need of replacement themselves. It would take a very brave person to ignore the evidence from Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II and buy plastic windows or doors ever again, though there’s not yet any law against it. Q – Tell me about Accoya. Is it a little tree somewhere?

Accoya is softwood that has been subjected to a patented acetylation process that leaves it unable to react with water, meaning it can’t warp, twist, expand, contract or rot. That makes Accoya perfect for making wooden windows and doors, because they’ll never jam or become draughty, and they’re guaranteed not to rot for 50 years, though you c an expect them to keep performing for decades after that. Accoya is more expensive than most other woods, naturally, but it’s carbon neutral and produced from sustainable softwood sources.
